In the study of rotations, reflections,
and translations in Geometry for ninth and tenth graders, tessellations are just
briefly mentioned, but our text does not explore them further. The
purpose for this WebQuest was to give students the opportunity to learn more
about tessellations for the quarterly project. This project idea is
one of many options that are offered and would be an alternative for those who
are comfortable with computers and the Web. The projects are due the
seventh week of the quarter and only cover material discussed in that quarter,
so this would fit in my first quarter's work.
A worksheet will be given to those who
choose to do this WebQuest as their project. They will fill in the
answers to the questions from Sections A and B, and would have space for the
hand drawings from Sec. C . The two original drawings from Section D
would be on a separate 8 1/2 x 11 inch unlined paper which they will provide.
The length of time this would take a
student might vary according to their understanding of the material, facility
with computers, and their artistic abilities. I would approximate that two
hours should be sufficient for a student to complete this as their project.
This could probably be used as an all-class activity in the computer lab and
would require two class periods (43 minutes). With my curriculum
requirements it would be difficult to devote that much time to this topic.
