Who We Are, What We Do.

"The Nations will fear the name of the LORD, all of the kings of the earth will revere your glory.

For the LORD will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.

He will respond to the prayer of the destitute;  he will not despise their plea.

Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD:

"The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death."

Psalms 102: 15-20

Who We Are

Rationale

The History Club at CVCA provides opportunities for students who enjoy the survey classes taught at CVCA to explore the depths of history more thoroughly. The History Club augments and expands in-class learning in a manner similar to clubs such as French Club, Spanish Club, etc.

Focus/Theme

Each year or semester the leadership and membership of the club chooses a particular time period of focus and designs activities accordingly. Our first area of emphasis for the 2004-2005 school year was the World War II era.  Our emphasis for 2005-2006 is developments and progressions from early civilization.

What We Do

Club activities consist of a mixture of the following:

    1. Lectures/Seminars – Both CVCA faculty and outside guests provide an in-depth look at a specific area related to the current focus of the club. This could include an in-depth talk on how Lincoln’s leadership effected the outcome of events in the Civil War or a talk from a combat veteran of World War II
    2. Book Club/Readings – The club selects a historical monograph by a respected yet accessible historian to discuss periodically throughout the semester. Examples could be James McPherson’s The Battle Cry of Freedom or Stephen Ambrose’s Band of Brothers
    3. Movies – Club members view and discuss a films related to the historical focus selected by the club.
    4. Field Trips – The club sponsor one or two optional field-trips per year on a Saturday. These could be to sites such as Hale Farm and Village or to see the U-Boat in Cleveland depending on the current focus.
    5. Historical Simulation/ Kriegspiel – Students will be able to use board games or computer simulations to further explore the focus selected by the club. This is mixture of freeware and/or commercial software purchased by the club with club dues.
